Twilight of the year settles
from a picture book sky
green transmutes to gold
garden dresses for bed
as birds rob
                     red berries
branches fade
Robin shrills clear
                     hooded domes of fungi
                     camp in sheltered spots
                     caravans of faery
cluster in the rot
Holly bristles proudly an evergreen gloss
Yew mournfully shades
Mice at its feet
bird at its shoulder
                              Painted lady frets
no bloom now to wet
an eager tongue
air hangs thinly in
shaded hours
blankets of grey down
draw across
Autumn skies
